JUDY A. ROXAS, recipient of the Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Award for Nationalism
Judy A. Roxas is the eldest of three children of industrialist Jesus Amado and Ester Araneta of Sago, Negros Occidental. Her family is behind the Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City and various other organizations under the Araneta Group of Companies, of which she is now the Senior Executive Vice President. A true blue Assumptionista, Judy completed her studies from elementary till college at Assumption, where she obtained her Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree in 1954.

She was married in 1955 to Senator Gerardo "Gerry" Roxas, son of President Manuel A. Roxas, and has three children: Ria, now Mrs. Augusto Ojeda and mother of three, Senator Mar Roxas, and the late Congressman Dinggoy Roxas of Roxas City.

She is well known as the matriarch of the famous Araneta clan, the family behind various organizations under the Aranera Group of Companies. But not many know that Judy Araneta Roxas is not only a working executive, doing her daily chores as Senior Executive Vice-President of the Araneta Group of Companies, but also an intense advocate of volunteerism engaging herself in various civic, social, and spiritual organizations.

I. LEADERSHIP: INVOLVEMENT IN ORGANIZATIONS PROMOTING NATIONALISM AND SOCIAL JUSTICE, POVERTY ALLEVIATION, & BASIC EDUCA TION FOR THE POOR

The first call to volunteerism came with the founding of the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF), an educational trust trust organized in 1958 to provide scholarships to poor but deserving youth.

Under her chairmanship for over 40 years, GRF has evolved into a full grown institution serving Philippine communities by helping create access to good governance, justice in barangays, education, and economic opportunities. The core strategy of the foundation is to develop leaders, build their spirit and capacity for management service, and results.

She is at the helm of sundry organizations, foremost as Chairperson of the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF) established in 1958 for poor and deserving students in honor of her late husband Gerry. To date, GRF has assisted over 1,200 students through their college education and recognized over 56,000 outstanding high school graduates nationwide for their youth leadership accomplishments.

II. PROMOTION OF VOLUNTEERI8M THROUGH LEADERSHIP IN ORGANIZATIONS PROMOTING LIVELIHOODS FOR THE MARGINALIZED AND SOLIDARITY AMONG THE FILIPINO PEOPLE

As Chairperson of the Gerry Roxas Foundation, Judy has generously supported over 1,200 leadership awardees through their college education. Some of them now hold responsible positions in government as well as in private organizations both here and abroad.

Judy is also chairperson of the Association of Foundations, Capiz Women, Inc., and La Salle affiliate College, Roxas City; president of Assumption Alumni Association and J. Amado Araneta Foundation; mover of the liberal Party founded by her father-in-law President Roxas; and director of Winrock Foundation, TOYM, Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko. Mapua Institute of Technology, President Manuel A. Roxas Foundation, and various other social development organizations.

For her outstanding achievements as a Christian worker and leader, Judy was personally bestowed the Papal Award in 1987 by no less than Pope John Paul II. At the awarding ceremonies, then Cardinal Jaime Sin claimed he witnessed how she remained a woman of great faith working with and treating other people with "a soul of consideration and gentleness" even when tragedy touched 'her life as when her husband Gerry passed away.

Through the years, Judy continues to immerse herself in volunteer work with various civic, social, and spiritual organizations.
